App Center
In 2015 Weebly launched an App Center allowing third party developers to make new functionality that integrated into Weebly. In 2020 the App Center was closed to new apps. You can still get to weebly.com/developer but the Get Started links lead to a 404 error.
Mobile apps effectively abandoned
The Android/iOS “Weebly by Square” app hasn’t seen meaningful feature updates in years, and users report the editor “no longer works”.
Weebly for Education
In 2009 Weebly launched a set of features for allowing teachers to use Weebly in classrooms. The Weebly for Education platform was shut down in 2022.
Weebly Promote
Weebly Promote is an application for building marketing emails using an editor very similar to the Weebly website editor. Promote had tight integration with Weebly features like blog and ecommerce. Promote was launched in 2016. According to these Square community posts (1, 2) Weebly Promote is being retired.
Stock Images
In 2011 Weebly integrated with Flickr to provide easy access to adding stock photography to websites. This feature was recently quietly discontinued with no replacement.
Broken Links
The footer on help.weebly.com shows three links: Weebly Blog, Inspiration Center, and Community. The first two send you back to the weebly.com homepage. As of the writing of this post the community.weebly.com has an invalid SSL certificate.
Price Increases
According to this post on reddit lower priced plans are being phased out in favor of higher priced plans.
Why Does this Matter?
All the publicly available evidence points to Weebly being a product that is ignored by its parent company which has decided to focus on Square Online since it better integrates into its payment processing ecosystem. But Weebly remains active. If you already have a Weebly website why should you care?
The technology and usage patterns for websites are constantly changing. It used to be that ranking highly for specific keywords in Google was the most important thing. Now your content needs to be found by AI agents. It used to be that having a great looking website in desktop web browsers was what mattered. Now, for many sites, they are more likely to be viewed on mobile devices than desktop.
