A man has been arrested and charged with the fatal Sunday shooting of Jonathan Joss, the voice actor best known for his role as John Redcorn in King of the Hill, in San Antonio, Texas.
Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, 56, was arrested on Sunday at around 7:05 pm local time, and has been charged with first-degree murder, a felony. His bond was set at $200,000.
Neighbors told KSAT 12 that the suspect lived a few houses down from the site of Joss’ former home on Dorsey Street, which was destroyed in a fire in January. The neighbors said that Joss would periodically stop by to check on the site and pick up his mail, and they said he appeared to be doing that on Sunday when the shooting occurred.
One woman said she noticed Joss standing at the edge of his property and arguing with a person in a car. She said, "I had just gotten into my vehicle, turned it on, and so my back was to them. I didn’t see when it happened. That’s when gunshots rang out."
She said she took cover and heard a car speed away. "Then that’s when I looked up and saw (Joss) on the ground."
Neighbors who spoke with TMZ said that Joss went into a rage on Sunday after finding the skeleton of one of his dogs that were killed in the fire. This allegedly led to the argument with Ceja, with whom Joss has reportedly gotten into physical and verbal fights with in the past.
One neighbor told KSAT that Joss "would argue with different people. It could be over dogs. It could be over trash." Another said, "We would see him down the street yelling, ranting and raving. Other times, he could be really sweet."
The San Antonio Police Department said in a statement, "SAPD Homicide is currently investigating the murder of Mr. Jonathan Joss. Despite online claims of this being a hate crime, currently the investigation has found no evidence to indicate that the Mr. Joss’s murder was related to his sexual orientation. SAPD investigators handle these allegations very seriously and have thoroughly reviewed all available information. Should any new evidence come to light, the suspect will be charged accordingly."
This came after Joss’ husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, claimed that a man approached them when they found "the skull of one of our dogs and its harness placed in clear view" at the burned down home, leading to the two of them "yelling and crying in response."
The man allegedly "started yelling violent homophobic slurs at us. He then raised a gun from his lap and fired." He claimed Joss was "murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other."
