Stephen Miller’s fawning spin on President Donald Trump’s recent economic moves drew mockery on social media, with critics slamming the take as “extremely stupid” and more.
After Trump tanked the stock markets and sparked fears of a global recession with his proposed tariffs, the president paused most of the levies and opened the U.S. up for negotiations with foreign countries, causing a slight rally in stocks.
While Trump’s detractors suggested the about-turn was a sign he doesn’t know what he’s doing, White House deputy chief of staff for policy Miller interpreted it on X (formerly Twitter) like this:
“You have been watching the greatest economic master strategy from an American President in history.”

— Stephen Miller (@StephenM) April 9, 2025Critics, though, begged to differ:
Trump lost and caved in.
— Gandalv (@Microinteracti1) April 9, 2025You’re a total joke. You’re destroying people’s life savings with no thought whatsoever, causing global economic instability, and then, when the nonexistent strategy fails (unsurprisingly of course)… retreating.
Americans are smarter than this. https://t.co/EupQmpQ6GM
I’m watching his administration recoil from a sloppy deployment of a very shortsighted and contentious opening move.
This is a very obvious “you over played your hand move.” Now you’re attempting to spin the narrative because the result was so bad.
A man that could not get…
Trump made a massive mistake with the tariffs. He had to back down. So now his team has to protect his image and ego by saying extremely stupid things, like this: https://t.co/EyDG5iZ59p
