Seth Meyers on Tuesday mocked Donald Trump’s penchant for inventing expressions.
And the “Late Night” comedian pointed to five words that he believes always signal dishonesty from the president.
During the G7 summit in Canada, Trump was asked if Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin, should be welcomed back into the group, from which they were expelled in 2014 over Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
Trump said: “I’m not going to say he should at this point, because too much water’s gone over the dam, maybe. But it was a big mistake.”
The “too much water’s gone over the dam” line perplexed Meyers.
“I’m sorry, is that even a phrase or just another thing you think you heard somewhere?” he asked.
Then he added: “What’s this new thing with Trump just making up popular expressions? I guarantee you this: If Trump says, ‘You know what they say,’ then they don’t say that.”
