Rumors fly about Trump, Elon Musk reconciliation as feud enters second day

Rumors of reconciliation between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk spread as the feud has entered its second day, with some reports also saying that Trump has no interest in talking to tech entrepreneur Elon Musk.

There were some reports on Thursday evening that a phone call may take place to calm the storm between the two figures, however, the hopes of a Friday resolution were quashed after other reports came out saying that the president was not interested in a call with Musk.

According to ABC News' Jon Karl, he spoke to Trump about the potential call between him and Musk, and he reported the president "is not particularly interested in talking to Elon Musk ... who he called, ‘a man who has lost his mind.’”

Reuters, after reporting that a call between the two figures may take place, reversed itself and, citing a White House source who said that no call was planned for Friday. Fox News reported that Musk may speak to some Trump aides in order to see if the feud can be calmed.

The events took place after Trump and Musk traded barbs for a large portion of the day on Thursday, starting with Musk's disagreement in the days leading up with the president over the level of spending in the "Big Beautiful Bill" that has been making its way through Congress.

Earlier this week, after Musk departed his role as a special government employee, he came out swinging against the bill, posting to X, "This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it."

Appearing in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump accused Musk of not wanting the bill to pass because the legislation would revoke the electric vehicle mandate that was established by the Biden administration. Trump said, "He knew the inner workings of the bill better than anybody sitting here... He knew everything about it. He had no problem with it. All of a sudden he had a problem and he only developed the problem when he found out we're going to have to cut the EV mandate."

Musk claimed in response, "False, this bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!"

The back-and-forth between the two went further, with Musk accusing Trump of being on the Epstein files and Trump said he was "disappointed" in Musk and threatened to pull Musk’s federal contracts.
