Michigan Rep. Shri Thanedar can't name the cities and towns he represents in Congress. He's also trying to impeach President Donald Trump.
When asked "what are the five Grosse Pointes cities," Thanedar laughs, knowing he has no idea.
"Look," he says, "I'm not here to answer a quiz. I'm here to say that I'm going to fight for the people of Detroit. I'm going to fight for my constituents." The interviewer begins naming the cities, which Thanedar repeats.
Thanedar filed seven articles of impeachment against the president, saying "Donald Trump has already done real damage to our democracy. It's time we impeach Donald J Trump. The courts say the wrongfully deported Kilmar Garcia must be returned and receive due process. Trump ignored it, he ignored the Constitution, he ignored the very checks and balances that keep our democracy intact."
Thanedar claimed that Trump was trying to gain "unchecked power," but when it comes to his own power, he can't even name the cities and towns he is meant to represent in the people's House.
Thanedar isn't the only member of Congress currently making noise about impeachment. New York Senator Chuck Schumer has said that he thinks impeachment is not off the table should Democrats retake the House in the 2026 midterms, as has Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff.
Despite that, Thanedar does not have support from the Democratic Party to proceed with his impeachment intentions. He faces many primary challengers as he seeks to keep his seat in Michigan's 13th District.
Three Democrats who put their names on his impeachment bill as co-sponsors later removed them when they realized the articles did not have approval from Democrat leadership.
Thanedar is a native of India and spent his first 24 years there before moving to the US to study for his PhD at the University of Akron in Ohio. He attained his citizenship in 1988 and is now retired from his career as a scientist.
