Protestors gathered outside the Supreme Court on Thursday morning ahead of arguments in the case against President Donald Trump’s executive order revoking birthright citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants.
Immigrant advocacy group CASA held a rally outside the court, holding a large banner that read, "birthright citizenship is a constitutional right." CASA is one of the groups that brought a case against the administration over the birthright citizenship executive order that Trump issued on his first day back in office.
Others held signs that read, "American born children are American children." Some advertised the group "By Any Means Necessary" (BAMN), which is the "Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration and Immigrant Rights and Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary." The group states that it is "committed to defeating Donald Trump and his fascist movement by any means necessary." On its website, the group urges members to "STOP, BLOCK, and DRIVE ICE OUT."
Protestors chanted in Spanish, "The people united will never be defeated," and in English, "Black, Latino, and Asian and white, birthright citizenship is our right."
In addition to weighing the topic of birthright citizenship, the Supreme Court will also be considering whether lower courts blocking Trump policies nationwide have overstepped their authority, per Fox News. The justices are expected to weigh the ability of lower courts to issue nationwide injunctions that block presidential actions.
