OOF: Trump Mocked After Botching A Key Name During A Major Announcement

1 month ago 1

President Donald Trump on Sunday made an awkward error as he attempted to describe a deal that would pave the way for Nippon Steel to invest heavily in U.S Steel, but botched the name of the Japanese company.

“They’re going to invest billions of dollars in steel, and it’s a good company, Nissan’s a very good company, we’ll see,” Trump said.

Nissan, a Japanese automaker, is not involved in the deal.

Nippon Steel has been trying to purchase U.S. Steel, but President Joe Biden blocked the bid before leaving office on national security grounds.

Trump had threatened to do the same, but now says concessions by the Japanese firm mean it will be an investment and “partnership,” although many details remain unclear.

“It’ll be controlled by the United States, otherwise I wouldn’t make the deal,” he said on Sunday in the same comments where he botched the name. He made the same mistake in February, when he repeatedly referred to Nippon Steel as “Nissan.”

His critics called him out over the latest flub:

Is Trump confusing Nissan with Nippon Steel? WTF?

I was told Trump saved U.S Steel.
He doesn't even know who it was sold to, he thinks Nissan bought it.

Who's running the country??? https://t.co/MGYhEDcdBb
