Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal’s daughter, Romona Sarsgaard, was put under arrest during an occupation of Columbia's University's Butler Library on Wednesday evening. The occupation was to protest the nation of Israel's war against Hamas terrorists.
Sarsgaard, 18, was arrested as she and around 100 other agitators were storming the university's library earlier on Wednesday, according to the New York Post, citing police sources. Students in the library were studying for their final exams when protesters stormed in. The Post reported that as of Thursday morning, around 65 suspensions had been handed down to students that were participating in the chaotic demonstration.
Although it is unclear if Sarsgaard was suspended from the university, she was among those arrested as police led the agitators out of the library, handcuffing them with zip ties. The agitators had written "Columbia will burn" on a glass case inside the library and placed large signs over bookshelves.
The administration was quick to tamp down the protest, which is in strong contrast to the Gaza encampments that took place last spring, which the school allowed to go on for days.
Along with the students storming the library, another 33 people from different affiliated organizations as well as some alumni from the school have been barred from going on campus in the aftermath of the protest.
Sarsgaard's mother also attended Columbia University and has appeared in films such as "The Dark Knight" in 2008. Gyllenhaal graduated with a degree in English literature before hitting her stride in her acting career.
Not much is known about Sargaard's private life at the school, the Post added in their report.
