How Social Media Reacted To Announcement Of New Pope

1 month ago 4

The news of a new pope on Thursday was not only celebrated in Vatican City, but also on social media.

After the white smoke floated into the air from a Sistine Chapel chimney, and before Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was announced as Pope Leo XIV, people mused on X, formerly Twitter, about the then-unannounced new leader of the Catholic Church.

The suspense got to some ...

Early exit polls suggest the new pope did particularly well with male voters aged 45-79.

Others offered joking explanations about the pope-picking process.

Some people offered their predictions on who might be the next pontiff.

A new pope has been elected

PLEASE LET IT BE SAMUEL L. JACKSON

According to my sources the new Pope will be catholic.

Whoever the new pope is, Mel Kiper will be furious it's not Shedeur Sanders.

Some people wondered what President Donald Trump might think.

We have a new Pope...but you know, if Mike Pence has the courage...

— Rick Wilson (@TheRickWilson) May 8, 2025

I bet Trump is pissed the new Pope will steal the news attention away from him. He is that petty.

You know Donald Trump is super jealous of the crowd size of people that are gathering at the Vatican for the announcement of new Pope on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.

One person hoped that the cardinals in the papal conclave would go in another direction ― or even another form of life ― for the next pope.

Recent papal picks have been so boring so uninspiring. I hope they try something new, choose a mineral for pope or a virus, maybe a mushroom or an inanimate carbon rod.
Use your imagination!
