ESPN broadcaster says she should 'rephrase' after saying 'that's what makes America great' during WNBA game

During ESPN’s broadcast of the Indiana Fever vs. Las Vegas Aces WNBA game on Sunday, analyst Rebecca Lobo apologized for commenting that disagreement is what "makes America great," apparently withdrawing her comment because it sounds too close to President Donald Trump's well-known slogan.

The exchange occurred late in the game, as Lobo weighed in on a foul call she disagreed with. “They disagree with you,” play-by-play announcer Pam Ward told her.

“They do, and I disagree with them,” Lobo replied. “And that’s fine. That’s what makes America great, right Pam Ward?”

Following the comment, there was a long, awkward pause from both broadcasters. Lobo then said, “I should rephrase that,” to which Ward responded, “Yes.”

Ward suggested Lobo instead say “difference of opinion,” which she accepted. Lobo added, “Sorry about that,” before continuing with the game.

The awkward moment was apparently caused by her statement's proximiatey to “Make America Great Again,” popularized by President Trump.

The comment took happened during the Las Vegas Aces’ 89–81 win over the Indiana Fever. Indiana, led by league-favourite Caitlin Clark, held a lead through the first three quarters before Las Vegas pulled ahead in the fourth.
