Broadway legend Patti LuPone says 'Trumpified' Kennedy Center 'should get blown up'

Broadway legend Patti LuPone, known for her many roles in musicals such as Les Miserables, Anything Goes, and Sweeney Todd, criticized President Donald Trump and his administration’s overhaul of the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, saying that it should "get blown up."

LuPone’s comments were highlighted in a recent New Yorker piece by Michael Schulman, who wrote, "She’s even angrier at the rest of the country. She told me, more than once, that the Trumpified Kennedy Center 'should get blown up.'"

LuPone has been an outspoken critic of Trump for years, per Fox News, saying ahead of the 2020 election that if Trump won, she was considering a move to Ireland. At the Tony Awards in 2017, she said she would not perform for Trump if he came to one of her shows, "because I hate the mother—."

Kennedy Center President Ruchard Grenell told Fox News of LuPone’s comment, "The far left has morphed into violent extremists. This is completely unacceptable – from the same people who claim to be for tolerance and diversity. Everyone should condemn these radicals."

White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly said, "President Trump cares deeply about American arts and culture, which is why he is revitalizing historic institutions like the Kennedy Center to their former greatness."

Trump was elected the Chairman of the Board of the Kennedy Center in February. He has vowed to "make The Kennedy Center a very special and exciting place," and has said that he would terminate board members who "do not share our Vision for a Golden Age in Arts and Culture."

“The Kennedy Center is an American Jewel, and must reflect the brightest STARS on its stage from all across our Nation. For the Kennedy Center, THE BEST IS YET TO COME,” the president said.
