President Donald Trump said that Russian leader Vladimir Putin is "playing with fire" after an attack was carried out by Russia over the weekend in Kyiv, killing 12 people.
Trump posted to Truth Social, "What Vladimir Putin doesn’t realize is that if it weren’t for me, lots of really bad things would have already happened to Russia, and I mean REALLY BAD. He’s playing with fire!"
The post from Trump comes after the president has reportedly been weighing sanctions against the Kremlin in response to the continuous bombardment of Ukraine. Over the weekend, 298 drones as well as 69 missiles were launched into Ukraine's capital of Kyiv.
Under Trump's administration, the US has been attempting to broker a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia. He was able to get Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to agree to a ceasefire on the condition that Russia also agreed. However, the Kremlin has been slow to do so, and has launched several attacks since the ceasefire was proposed.
In another post responding to the weekend attacks, Trump said that Putin “has gone absolutely CRAZY” and added that the Russian leader is “needlessly killing a lot of people” including citizens.
“I've always said that he wants ALL of Ukraine, not just a piece of it, and maybe that's proving to be right, but if he does, it will lead to the downfall of Russia!” Trump later added.
The Kremlin responded on Monday, saying that there has been “emotional overload” in the war, with Russia spokesman Dmitry Peskov stating, "We are really grateful to the Americans and to President Trump personally for their assistance in organizing and launching this negotiation process. Of course, at the same time, this is a very crucial moment, which is associated, of course, with the emotional overload of everyone absolutely and with emotional reactions."
