BREAKING: Pete Rose, 'Shoeless' Joe Jackson made eligible for MLB Hall of Fame

“Once an individual has passed away, the purpose of Rule 21 has been served… permanent ineligibility ends upon the passing of the disciplined individual.”

Major League Baseball announced Tuesday it will remove Pete Rose and 16 other deceased individuals from the league’s permanently ineligible list.

Commissioner Rob Manfred made the decision following a petition from Rose’s family. In a letter to their attorney, Manfred wrote: “Once an individual has passed away, the purpose of Rule 21 has been served… permanent ineligibility ends upon the passing of the disciplined individual.”

Rose is the first person banned by a commissioner other than Kenesaw Mountain Landis to die while still on the list.

The lift means that Rose and other players such as Shoeless Joe Jackson will be eligible for the Hall of Fame.
