Bill Maher took jabs at Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s latest controversies on Friday’s episode of HBO’s “Real Time,” calling him the “worst thing to hit the Pentagon” since the Sept. 11 attack.
“I’m not saying Pete makes a terrible defense secretary, but he’s the worst thing to hit the Pentagon since Flight 77,” the comedian said to a room full of laughs and “oohs.”

Hegseth has been on the defensive, lashing out at the media this week after multiple reports dove deep into the chaos surrounding him and the Pentagon.
The secretary of defense reportedly shared military secrets in a personal Signal chat scandal and used an unsecured internet line to connect to the messaging app. The Signal scandal was Hegseth’s second, following a March incident in which Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg said he was inadvertently added to a group chat where Hegseth shared sensitive national security information.
“New Rule: Pete Hegseth’s parents have to take away his phone,” Maher said. “He can have it back when he’s shown us he’s grown up enough to use it responsibly.”
Hegseth also fired three aides he accused of leaking to the press, and to top it all off, became a laughing stock on the internet after ordering a room in the Pentagon be used as a makeup studio.
